Anxiety Disorders

The anxiety disorders are a group of conditions characterized by intense anxiety as a core symptom. Anxiety may be manifested by panic attacks, which involve heart palpitations, sweating, trembling, sensations of shortness of breath or smothering, feeling of choking, chest pain or discomfort, nausea or abdominal distress, dizziness or lightheadedness, derealization, fear of losing control, fear of dying, numbness or tingling sensations, and/or chills or hot flashes.

Anxiety disorders encompass a range of mental disturbances including:

  • Panic attack
  • Panic disorder with or without Agoraphobia
  • Specific phobia
  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder
  • Acute stress disorder
  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Substance-induced anxiety disorder

Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent psychiatric disturbances and can be debilitating. Treatment of such disorders may or may not involve the use of medications, depending upon the severity of symptoms and functional limitations. Cognitive behavioral approaches have shown to be among the most effective treatments.
